Deciding whether or not to create a new discussion

Before creating a new discussion, please spend some time browsing existing topics to make sure that the topic you intend to create is not going to duplicate a discussion which is already happening.

Use the search bar at the top right of the screen or browse topics by tags in order to find what you are looking for. This will also help you meet the person who share common interests.

We are friendly community so you won't be shouted at if you duplicate a topic, but we would appreciate it if you could help us keep things as tidy as possible ;)

Tips for creating a useful topic

  • Choose the correct category for your topic. To help you determine if your topic is suited for a given category, each category contains an 'About this category' post which offers a small list of relevant ideas which can fit in the category.
  • Use tags. Tags are small keywords that can be associated to a discussion. We rely quite heavily on tags for grouping topics that are related. These are particularly helpful for others to find keyword related posts.
  • Make the discussion title or question as descriptive as possible. A good discussion title is a short preview of your post and is what gets people to click and read. For example, instead of ‘Won’t Connect’, try ‘Help, I’m having problems getting my Acme modem into bridge mode.’
  • Use formatting to emphasise essential points in your message but keep it minimal. Overly formatted posts can also distract from the message and it encourages others to do likewise and you end up with a hard to read thread. You can find documentation on post formatting on the Vanilla official documentation.

Forum features you may find useful

  • Mention others. Put an @ symbol before the username to mention someone. They’ll get notified when you do. You can use this for example to credit other members if you are building off their previous comments or if you want to draw them into the discussion.
  • Polling. It is possible to ask for the opinion of the members of the community from within the forum. You can attach a poll by ticking the 'Attach Poll' box at the bottom right of the editor.
  • Update your notification preferences. You’ll receive a notification if someone mentions you or posts to a discussion that you’ve bookmarked. You can set notifications from the Edit Profile page.
  • Private messages. You can private message members by going to your inbox, or visiting their profile page (click their username anywhere).
  • Video / Tweet embedding: Just paste in the link of the video or tweet you would like to embed. The forum (Vanilla) will perform the embed automatically.
